IBF welterweight championship:
Errol Spence Jr. vs. Carlos Ocampo!
Sporting News’ No. 4-ranked Errol Spence Jr. returns to the ring for the second time in 2018 on Saturday, June 16, putting his IBF welterweight championship on the line against mandatory challenger Carlos Ocampo from the Ford Center in Frisco, Tex.
In January, Spence, 28, (23-0, 20 KOs) made his first title defense, dominating Lamont Peterson from the outset in winning by seventh-round TKO when Peterson’s father and trainer threw in the towel. After calling out unified champion Keith Thurman to no avail, Spence decided to give back to the fans and defend the belt in his home state.
This will be the first time Ocampo, 22, (22-0, 13 KOs) has competed in the United States, having fought exclusively in his home country of Mexico. He’s coming off of a stoppage victory over Dario Ferman in November.
Looking at the fight, it is one Spence Jr. should easily win: Ocampo hasn’t fought anyone near the caliber of “The Truth,” who’s faced some of the best in the world at 147 pounds. It is hard to justify the bout when Ocampo’s never faced one in the top 15 of the IBF rankings. As we have seen with the sanctioning body — look at Gennady Golovkin — they will have no issue in stripping someone of their title if it isn’t defended in an ordinary amount of time.
Spence is one of the best in the world and is always a treat to see him fight inside the ring. Somebody will walk out of Texas on Saturday with the first loss of their career.
